Is BJJ a good option for self Defense?! I’m a regular person who loves Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and specializes in self-defense for my own personal interest. A lot of what works in Sport Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t necessarily translate to the real world and the basics you need for self defense won’t do you much good in a competitive setting either. 

 

Sport BJJ emphasizes competition rules and scoring, while self-defense BJJ focuses on survival. To put it simply, sport BJJ is like playing chess; self-defense BJJ is the street smarts to avoid a checkmate in real life. More likely than not it’s your last line of defense in a real world scenario not your opening move if you can avoid it.

In self-defense, preparation is key. Scenario-based training is a game-changer in this regard. Imagine being pinned to the ground by an assailant. Without the skills to escape or reverse the situation, you’re at a significant disadvantage. BJJ equips you with the tools to shift the balance of power in your favor. It gives you the ability to stand a chance and actually defend yourself instead of being helpless to the circumstance. 

 

This type of training sharpens your instincts and boosts your confidence in handling unforeseen threats. While you hope to never face such situations, being prepared is essential, and why you can’t be prepared for everything, knowing something and having experience in similar scenarios will come out in instinct when you need it.

While most altercations end on the ground, the street is not the mat. You want to get up as soon as possible because you will seldomly find yourself in a one on one altercation.

Not all confrontations start on the ground. Sometimes, it’s a grab, chokehold, or even a punch that initiates the conflict. This is where standing self-defense techniques in BJJ come into play.

These are often more preferable in a real world scenario based on what we talked about in the previous section.
